BMW K 1600 GT

Famous environmentalist, Sadhguru has set off on a 30,000-kilometre journey from London to India to raise awareness on his Save Soil campaign.

The campaign will see him ride his BMW K 1600 GT motorcycle across Europe and the Middle East en route to India just in time for the Summer Solstice on June 21, 2022.

The first course of the week will witness the ‘yogic guru’ riding through Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague before aiming to arrive in New Delhi in 75 days in honour of India’s 75th year of independence.

According to Sadhguru, soil depletion is a worrying rate, and he hopes that the campaign will have a significant impact on raising awareness.

“It’s extremely important that we act now. I’ve been talking about this for over 24 years, but solution can only happen when there is positive policy in every nation.

“It is still snowing in many parts of Europe and we’ll be going through that on a two-wheeler,” he said.

Although riding has been his passion, Sadhguru admits that he wants to use it to bring a positive change to the world.

The 64-year-old previously toured all of India on a Yamaha RD 350 and was also spotted cruising on a customised Honda VFR X for his ‘Save Cauvery River’ campaign.

“At this age, it’s not a joy ride. So why am I doing this? Because over 300,000 farmers have committed suicide in the last 20 years. Not just in India, across the world this is happening..one of the main concerns is soil depletion,” he added.

Sadhguru’s campaign aims at inspiring at least 3.5 billion from the world’s population to support long-term government policies to revitalise soil and reverse depletion.

BMW North America (BMW) is recalling all 2019 and 2020 BMW K1600 GT, K1600GTL, and K1600B motorcycles.

According to its recall notice, BMW says that a supplier’s link strut that connects the rear suspension to the frame may not have followed specification, as a result of a heat treatment “anomaly”.

In essence, it may not have sufficient strength over time and could result in the motorcycle’s rear end to collapse and contact the rear wheel.

Besides, this will also affect the riding stability and control.

The affected models totals around 1625 units, though it is unlikely a problem to be replicated.

As mitigation, the Bavarian brand had apparently switched suppliers from whoever produced these particular problematic parts to avoid any circumstances in the future.

Registered owners of the affected motorcycles should take them to an authorised BMW dealer as they will replace the rear link strut free of charge.

BMW’s breakdown of bikes affected in North America is as follows:

  • 2019-2020 BMW K 1600 GT: approximately 351 units produced between September 21, 2018 and December 28, 2019
  • 2019-2020 BMW K 1600 GTL: approximately 352 units produced between December 4, 2018 and January 27, 2020
  • 2019-2020 BMW K 1600 B: approximately 922 units produced between September 21, 2018 and February 18, 2020

There is no indication if models designated for Malaysia may be affected, but do contact your dealer if there is any concern.

Willem Heijboer dreamt about turning his BMW K1600GT into a GS, but as he started grinding out the engine case, he realised he might not be able to get the job done.

He then reached out to Dutch bike builder expert, Nico Bakker where he specifically told him that he wants the K1600GT to feature the same handling, litheness and looks as the GS but most importantly, it could handle the power from the inline-six K1600 engine.

Bakker then used the K1600GT as a base and retained the engine, shaft drive, 320mm brakes disc, Brembo callipers, Bosch ABS and electronics, including the ESA.

However, to emulate the rigidity and stiffness to accommodate the K1600 engine, Bakker custom built the frame using chrome-moly steel tubing and extended the wheelbase from 1618mm to 1635mm.

He also had to sharpen the steering geometry, but to do so, Bakker ditched the Telelever front in place of a fully adjustable 48mm WP fork.

The complete the GS look, the K16 is fitted with 19″ front, and 17″ rear spoke wheels.

Bakker also fitted the bike with a 6-into-2 exhaust with custom twin carbon-wrap silencers.

Interestingly, Heijboer already took the custom build K1600GS for long-distance touring and even to a track day just to test out the handling.
