In a surprising turn of events, Harley-Davidson, is rumored to be on the brink of introducing a 200cc single-cylinder motorcycle, igniting speculations of a potential face-off with Royal Enfield in the highly competitive sub-300cc motorcycle segment in India.

A few months ago, Harley-Davidson unveiled the X 440, its first single-cylinder offering in decades, with aspirations to capture market share from Royal Enfield’s globally renowned 350cc lineup.

However, recent sightings of a test mule resembling the X 440 in India have fueled rumors of a smaller 200cc Harley-Davidson roadster, tentatively named the X 210. This development has raised questions about the possibility of Harley-Davidson expanding its small-displacement portfolio.

One compelling reason for Harley-Davidson to consider a 200cc roadster is its strategic intent to challenge Royal Enfield’s dominance in the sub-300cc segment.

While the X 440 boasts competitive pricing, it still falls short of matching Royal Enfield’s extensive 350cc range. The introduction of the X 210 could provide Harley-Davidson with a more affordable entry point into the market.

The demographics of the Indian market play a significant role in this potential move. India has witnessed a strong demand for sub-300cc motorcycles, with consumers willing to compromise on certain features if the pricing is competitive.

Another crucial factor contributing to the feasibility of the X 210 is Harley-Davidson’s partnership with Hero MotoCorp in India.

Hero MotoCorp recently introduced a new 210cc, liquid-cooled engine producing 25 horsepower and approximately 15 pound-feet of torque. This powerplant could serve as the heart of the X 210, with some fine-tuning to align it with Harley-Davidson’s characteristic focus on low-end torque.

However, not all signs point definitively toward the X 210 becoming a reality. The test mule spotted in India closely resembles the X 440 in terms of design and exhaust layout.

Furthermore, neither Harley-Davidson nor Hero MotoCorp has officially filed any documentation or statements regarding a 200cc roadster.

What can be confirmed, however, is that Harley-Davidson India is actively working on the Nightster 440, a motorcycle expected to offer a premium Harley-Davidson cruiser experience, differentiating itself from the X 440 and showcasing the brand’s commitment to diversifying its lineup.

Meanwhile, the WMoto VE1-110E, priced at RM3,748, has an engine displacement of 106.7cc, producing power up to 6.6Hp at 8,000rpm and a maximum torque of 6.9Nm at 6,000rpm. It has telescopic suspension on the front tires and dual-shock absorbers on the rear, ensuring perfect shock absorption. The bike is available in three colours – red, blue, and yellow.

The third option is the WMoto WM110 that is offered at a starting price of RM3,788, equipped with a 109cc engine capable of producing power up to 7.1Hp at 8,000rpm and 7.2Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. It has KYB suspension for higher handling performance, stability, and travel safety.

The bike uses disc brakes on the front wheel, making it safer to ride. It has a bright front light for night riding, and its 4-litre fuel tank is suitable for daily use. It is available in three colours – blue, red, and black.

All these affordable motorcycles are available at any authorised MForce dealer throughout Malaysia, with a manufacturer’s warranty of two years or 20,000 km travel distance (whichever comes first). MForce also offers online genuine parts purchase service for its bikes.

BMW – in partnership with TVS Motor Company – introduced the G 310 R and G 310 GS to make motorcycle ownership more affordable.

Triumph is set to follow suit with an upcoming scrambler-type motorcycle built in partnership with India’s Bajaj Auto, while MV Agusta is currently developing an adventure bike called the Lucky Explorer 5.5 that borrows the same parallel-twin engine from Benelli’s TRK502.

All of these are part of an initiative to expand each brand’s presence towards a bigger market. 

However, Ducati has no interest in following in the same footstep, according to the firm’s Head of Design, Andrea Ferraresi, during a recent interview with MCN.

 

“Actually, no, because we want to move the brand up more. We are already a premium brand, and we are already on the top of the premium segment.

“We want to stay there and raise a bit. 

“To do this, one of the most important things is to keep the entry price into the range at a certain level. We want to keep this price not lower than the Monster.”

“What to do with the young riders? We have the Scramblers, which have a more affordable price. 

“But there is no entry Ferrari or entry Porsche, so you start with other brands and keep in mind Ducati and then as soon as you can, you buy a Ducati,” he said.

That said, don’t expect an entry-level Ducati anytime soon.
