Mat Rempit Dies, Injures Another Person in Illegal Race

A Mat Rempit died while a “spectator” was seriously injured in an illegal race.
The PDRM are now hunting for the other two “racers.”
The videos show the accident and aftermath.

A Mat Rempit killed another motorcyclist and injured another during an illegal race in Kota Bahru, Kelantan on Saturday (18^th August 2018).

As shown the video, a large crowd had gathered to spectate an illegal race. Two bikes blew by followed by a third a few seconds afterwards. The third bike then struck a pedestrian who had stepped onto the “track”.

The motorcyclist, Norazrin Azizan Abdul Aziz, 26, died while receiving emergency treatment at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian. The pedestrian, Mohd. Azhan Baharudin, 25, had both his legs broken and is now lying unconscious at the same hospital.

The Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) are now hunting for the other two illegal racers. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (Jabatan Siasatan dan Penguatkuasaan Trafik) Director, Datuk Sharul Othman Mansor said that the two were complicit in causing the death of Norazrin and bodily harm to Mohd. Azhan.

He continued, “The two motorcyclists are wanted for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.”

Datuk Sharul made the announcement at a media conference codenamed as “Operasi Samseng Jalan (Operation Road Hooligans)” which he headed at Seremban last night.

ARRC Champ Azlan Shah Involved in Traffic Accident

Azlan Shah is the 2017 ARRC 600cc Champion.
He didn’t sustain bad injuries in the accident although his tongue required seven stitches, besides losing his phone and money.
Azlan is slated to begin his 2018 season preparation soon.

2017 Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) 600cc champion, Azlan Shah was involved in a traffic accident later yesterday.

“I was travelling home from Sunway. The road was very dark and I suddenly hit a lorry. I blacked out immediately and realised I was in the hospital when I came to,” said the rider when speaking to Malaysian daily, Berita Harian.

Onlookers rushed Azlan to the Selayang Hospital after witnessing the crash which totalled his Toyota.

“I’m thankful that I escaped relatively unscathed, although I’ve lost my cellphone and money,” he continued. He received a deep cut to his tongue for which it received seven stitches. “I could eat or talk much due to the multiple stitches. It’s only porridge for me at the moment.”

Azlan will be heading to the Chang International Circuit at Buriram, Thailand to being his pre-season preparations today.

“The accident will not affect my focus on defending my championship this year. My determination and motivation remains unchanged from last year. It’s going to be more competitive this year but I believe I could still put up a big challenge.”

Azlan will be riding for the Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki Racing team from Indonesia this year.

Passenger Safety: Gear Up!

Study confirms that passengers are more prone to injury.
It’s the rider’s responsibility to ensure the passenger is fully geared up.
At least a good helmet is necessary.

Remember that video which went viral? Most riders already knew that it’s the passenger who usually comes out the worse in the event of an accident.

Unfortunately, we still see many riders who don’t equip their passengers adequately when riding. The rider may be cladded in armoured jacket and pants, a good helmet, gloves and boots, but the passenger looks like he or she just got back from the beach, and wearing a helmet seemingly made when Allahyarham Tun Hussein Onn was Prime Minister.

Published in Reuters Health, it is confirmed by researchers that passengers are likely to suffer more traumatic injuries compared to riders.

Even with helmets on, 36 percent of the passengers suffered traumatic brain injury, compared to 31 percent among riders.

Dr. Tyler Evans of the Indiana University School of Medicine said, “We believe that in certain accidents, the passenger is more likely to be ejected from the motorcycle.” This is the likely scenario why passengers face a higher risk of brain injury, he added.

While riders face lower risks since they could hold on to the handlebar and fuel tank, and protected by the windscreen in some cases, passengers don’t have such luxury since they have little to hold onto. This is especially advantageous for the riders since they know what’s happening and could brace themselves.

In Malaysia, there were 39,744 deaths resulting from motorcycle accidents between 2005 to 2014.

The knowledge gained from this study means that the rider should always provide the best helmet and riding gear he or she could afford for the passenger. Come to think of it, the passenger should be better equipped than the rider!

Valentino Rossi will race race at Aragon this weekend, after all. In a news that surprised everyone, perhaps even Rossi himself, the nine-time World Champion has been deemed fit to race.

Mandatory medical exams were carried out by MotorLand Aragon’s Chief Medical Officer, Clemente Milan. Rossi will take part in tomorrow’s FP1 session.

Rossi’s leg broke in two places in a freak, low-speed enduro accident just 21 days ago (click here to read about it). He has even said that such injury would normally take at least 40 days to heal, due to a similar injury back in 2010, which Jorge Lorenzo won his first MotoGP championship.

Rossi took to the track on a Yamaha R-1M street bike at Misano (click here for our coverage) to test his fitness and came away saying that he will try to race this weekend (click here for the full story).

Professional racers have long had a certain determination to get back to racing despite injuries that would sideline any mere mortal. Heroes past and present, such as Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer, in fact almost all of them would come back to ride and sometimes even win in spite of their injuries.

Rossi currently lies fourth in the 2017 MotoGP Championship with 157 points. Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso are jointly leading on 199 points, while Rossi’s teammate, Maverick Vinalez is in third with 183 points. Aragon GP is the 14th round of the 18-round 2017 championship.

Valentino Rossi’s 2017 Title Fight in Doubt

Valentino Rossi’s 2017 MotoGP title chase is in doubt, when the 9-time world champion suffered fractures to his fibula and tibula in his right leg, following an enduro training crash.

Rossi underwent surgery overnight, where surgeons inserted a meal pin to fixate the fractures. Yamaha could not ascertain when he will return to the track but Rossi says that he’ll try his best to do so.

“The surgery went well,” Rossi said. “This morning, when I woke up, I felt already good. I would like to thank the staff of the Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona, and in particular Doctor Pascarella who operated on me.

“I’m very sorry for the incident. Now I want to be back on my bike as soon as possible. I will do my best to make it happen!”

Valentino Rossi had finished third at the just-concluded Octo British Grand Prix on 17th August 2017, and currently lies fourth in the championship standings with 157 points, 26 points behind the leader, Andrea Dovizioso of Team Ducati MotoGP who has accumulated 183 points.

“Last night Movistar Yamaha MotoGP‘s Valentino Rossi had a successful operation on the displaced fractures of the tibia and fibula of his right leg.

“The MotoGP-star was hospitalised after an enduro accident yesterday evening.

“Following a medical examination at the ’Ospedale Civile di Urbino’, where he was initially diagnosed, the Italian was transported to the ‘Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti’ in Ancona.

“Upon arrival, he received surgery between 2am – 3am by Dr. Raffaele Pascarella, Director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Division. During the surgery the fractures were fixated using a metal pin – a locked intramedullary nail – without any complications.

“Further medical updates will follow in due course.

“Yamaha would like to thank the entire staff of the ‘Ospedale Civile di Urbino’ and ‘Ospedali Riuniti di Ancona’ for their dedication and professional care.”
