MotoGP: Gresini Racing goes independent starting 2022

Gresini Racing will start competing in the MotoGP 2022 season as an independent team after signing a five-year agreement with IRTA (International Road-Racing Teams Association). This deal confirms the first slot of 2022 being confirmed by Gresini but no talks on which manufacturer they’ll work with.

The past few seasons with Aprilia were also regarded as an independent team rather than a full-factory squad. Beginning 2022, Gresini might still run with the Aprilia RS-GP machinery, but talks of them wanting to run the Suzuki GSX-RR is currently underway as well.

The Gresini outfit has been active in MotoGP since 1997 throughout all classes and that has gathered a total of 41 podiums, 14 wins, and three runner-up finishes. They’re looking to add more to this record as they prepare themselves to further develop in the Aprilia RS-GP for the 2021 season.

According to Fausto Gresini, Team Manager, “We’re happy to announce this agreement with IRTA, which will see us in MotoGP for five years starting from 2022. We will not be representing Aprilia as a factory team anymore, so we will continue as an Independent Team, doing so with as much will and commitment. There’s a lot of work to do and many things to define and communicate. Obviously, we’re already working on this huge project, and we will reveal the details little by little. Stay tuned!”
