MotoGP: Andrea Iannone confirms split with Suzuki

  • Andrea Iannone will be leaving Team Suzuki Ecstar at the end of the MotoGP 2018 season.

  • The Italian rider also stated that his future in the premier class will be determined in the following week.

  • The Suzuki factory squad is currently trying to rope in 2017 Moto3 world champion and current Moto2 rider, Joan Mir.

MotoGP rider Andrea Iannone has confirmed that he’ll be leaving the Suzuki factory team (Team Suzuki Ecstar) at the end of the season. Despite giving the Hamamatsu factory their first ever back-to-back podium finishes since their return to the premier class, it seems that both parties have made up their minds.

According to the Italian rider, “This year started really well but last year was very difficult for us, so we choose two different ways, but I will try my best from here until the end of the season and Suzuki will try and support me 100% until Valencia.”

Regarding his future in MotoGP, Iannone stated that everything will be confirmed in a week’s time (we strongly believe that he’ll sign with Aprilia). The question now is who will be his replacement to race alongside Alex Rins in Suzuki? If you ask the team’s manager Davide Brivio, they are currently closing in on getting Moto2’s Joan Mir.

Getting Mir is no secret and with his super impressive performance in Moto3 last season and his quick adaption to Moto2 this season, Joan Mir is well on his way to the top of the class. Although nothing is in black and white just yet, we might get the confirmation by the next round in Catalunya.
