Malaysian Cub Prix CP130 category bows one last time before new 150cc SuperCub category replaces it next season.

The season finale of the 2016 Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship taking place in Taiping,Perak this weekend on the 19th and 20th November 2016 will also mark the last ever race for the CP130 category after running as the sport’s premiere class for the past eight years. The replacement category will be the 150cc SuperCub class.

There were many of those who had been crowned CP130 champion before, from seasoned riders to younger talents in the field. The most successful would be Cub Prix legend Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin who won the CP130 crown in 2009 and 2013.

Also worth mentioning is current national Moto2 rider Hafizh Syahrin, who was crowned CP130 champion back in 2010. Norizman Ismail was the next person in line to take the premier class glory in 2011 before former Moto2 rider and Asia Road Racing Championship ace Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman did the same in 2012.

Yamaha’s support saw Fuad taking the CP130 title in 2013 but Honda took the crown back again in 2014 with the strong help from Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi.

It was a strong battle between Yamaha and Honda but the past two years, Yamaha reigned supreme with Ahmad Fazrul Sham in 2015 and Kasma Daniel, who won the 2016 CP130 title just last month and simultaneously became the youngest ever CP130 champion at 16 years old.

Currently, Yamaha is leads the title count with five CP130 titles over rivals Honda who just have three so far.

Ron Hogg, Director of Safe Aim Mutual (Cub Prix promoters), stated that “The evolution of Cub Prix mirrors the changes in the Malaysian motorcycle industry. To stay at the crest of the ever-changing technological landscape, the shift to 150cc was inevitable. However, the transition required a two-year lead time in order that teams were given the time they needed to prepare for the new challenge.”
