Honda Africa Twin Achieves The Impossible

  • Honda has broken the world record for highest altitude reached by a twin-cylinder motorcycle using their new Africa Twin

  • A team of five climbed the Nevada Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano situated between Argentina and Chile

  • Fabio Mossini, world enduro champion from Honda’s Sud America race team took the Africa Twin all the way to the record breaking height  5,965 metres above sea level

The Honda Africa Twin has been hailed as one of the greatest adventure bikes of our generation. And a full year after its hugely successful world debut, the Africa Twin has reached even greater heights by breaking the record for the highest altitude reached by a twin-cylinder motorcycle. This achievement was also made possible thanks to Metzeler’s new off-road MC 360™ tires on the Africa Twin and CRF450RX. CLICK HERE to know more about Metzeler’s side of this momentous feat.

Fabio Mossini, world enduro champion from Honda’s Sud America race team was one of five men who rode the Honda up the world’s highest active volcano – the Nevada Ojos del Salado situated in between Argentina and Chile. The team rode the Africa Twin up the steep slopes of the volcano on to a record-breaking 5,965 metres above sea level. They could have progressed further but were halted by two metres of snow.

It took five days of acclimatisation, and the Africa Twin was completely stock standard except for the Termignoni exhaust, revised final sprocket, and the new Metzeler MC360 tyres together with a range of Honda genuine accessories which are also available for the public to buy. It took the international team 24 hours to complete the ascent. The route took them through extreme temperatures that went down to minus five degrees, through broken asphalt, gravel, mud, sand and finally stretches of ice pockets known as ‘penitentes’.

There has been no other motorcycle that has completed such a feat, and this underlines the Africa Twin’s credentials as the best off-road motorcycle in its class.
