Huge plumes of smoke from a burning rice field in Bagan Serai, Perak, forced a lorry driver to stop his vehicle due to extremely poor visibility yesterday afternoon. Unknowingly at the back, a motorcyclist carrying his wife and two kids weren’t unable to see the stopped three-tonne lorry due to the same heavy smoke and unfortunately, collided straight into it.
The motorcyclist’s six-year-old daughter was sitting at the front when the incident happened and unfortunately lost her life. The father, wife, and six-month-old baby suffered injuries but survived the ordeal. They were taken to the nearby medical facilities for medical attention.
Open burning of rice fields in Malaysia is a common occurrence every year, especially in states up north. While most would just label it as a big contributor to air pollution in the area, it is also dangerous as it causes poor visibility on nearby roads. Yesterday, this took away a life, and who’s to blame? Our deepest condolences to the entire family.
