Heads up riders, there will soon be a new route for you to consider should you be heading northbound of the peninsular. Bernama reports that the Perak state government had recently approved plans to construct a 64 -kilometer highway stretch from Gopeng to Kuala Kangsar.
This planned new highway will bypass the existing Menora Tunnel on the North-South Expressway (PLUS). The matter was confirmed by the Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, who also said that the project had been approved in April.
Though this route is longer, a shorter travel time is expected considering that it bypasses the hilly areas, which in turn should mitigate accident risks too.
The existing route on the PLUS that spans through the Menora Tunnel has garnered a notorious reputation due to its twisty and hilly nature causing frequent road accidents and deaths. Recently, five university students were injured after a car they were driving involved in an accident with two lorries near Kuala Kangsar.
According to Bernama’s report, the construction of the new highway is set to incur a cost of RM5.75 billion. Notably, the plans also indicate that it will house three main lanes and, crucially, a special motorcycle lane as well.
