Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R recall happening in the US – Gearbox might break?

A Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R recall just started in the US where the NHTSA has identified a major issue related to the transmission gears.

Almost 4,000 units of ZX-10R and ZX-10RR built from 2016 to 2018 have been discovered with this issue.

A high impact force may cause the transmission gears to break during shifting especially the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears.

2018 Ninja ZX-10RR

There’s a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R recall currently happening in the US right now where almost 4,000 units of ZX-10R and ZX-10RR built from 2016 and 2018 have been identified to be affected. Based on the report made by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), “A high impact force may cause the transmission gears to break during shifting.”

It seems that Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA are taking proactive measures after finding out the root of the cause when the issue surfaced from the bikes sold in Thailand. It turned out that the strength of the transmission gears especially the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are prone to breakage in a high impact force during shifting.

If the transmission gears break it can cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. (KMC) is recalling certain 2016-2018 ZX-10R and ZX-10RR (ZX1000R, ZX1000S, and ZX1000Z) motorcycles. A high impact force may cause the transmission gears to break during shifting.

Remedy
KMC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the 2nd, 3rd, 4th output gears and the 2nd input gear, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 15, 2018. Owners may contact KMC customer service at 1-866-802-9381. KMC’s number for this recall is MC18-01.
