Older bikers face higher risks

oldster11

ACCORDING to a recent study in the US, age is now a factor in causing motorcycle injuries. Data collected in the study between 2001 to 2008 revealed that bikers ages 60 and above are three times more likely to be hospitalised after crashing.

Not only that, bikers above the ages of 60 are two and a half times more susceptible to serious injuries than counterparts aged between 20 to 30 years. Researchers who conducted the study cited that the older bikers suffer the increased likelihood due to the conditions related to old age. These included deteriorating eyesight, the body’s reduced reaction time, but mostly due to decreased bone strengths.

Some across the Atlantic however argue that the US study’s findings were a result of inconsistent rider training programs and motorcycle laws across different states, as well as the nation’s high rates of drink-driving.

Whatever the causes, age is always a factor in almost everything in life and health. Even the most experience of riders should never relinquish the opportunity for regular retraining.
