MotoGP: Dovizioso conquers Austria; Marquez & Pedrosa podium

The Austrian MotoGP round of 2017 saw a tremendous battle between race winner Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and championship leader, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda).

After overtaking Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) who led the first half of the race, the duo battled continuously up until the very last corner of the very last lap.

Fellow Repsol Honda rider, Dani Pedrosa completed the podium spot with a third place finish.

The 11th round of the MotoGP 2017 held at the iconic Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria was indeed a great addition into the history books as one of the most captivating races of all time.

It was a battle to the finish between the factory Ducati riders and of course the Repsol Honda boys in a nail biting race especially between race winner Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez.

The pair was cool and calm at the beginning of the race where surprisingly Jorge Lorenzo and his aero wing fitted Ducati Desmosedici GP17 led the first half of the race. After a dramatic overtaking manoeuvre by both Dovizioso and Marquez, the real battle for the win started between the Ducati and Honda.

Countless overtaking manoeuvres were carried out between the Italian and the Spaniard. With Marquez pushing his limits, it was Dovizioso who came up triumphant with his cool and almost perfect riding.

The pair almost clashed at the final turn in the very last lap when Marquez came in too hot on board his Honda RC213V but DesmoDovi kept his Desmosedici GP17 tight across the apex and crossed the chequered flag as the victor. To check out the video, CLICK HERE.

The other Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa completed the podium after almost catching up with the front two when they were tripping up each other. Pedrosa’s uncharacteristic choice of going with the hard rear tyre was the main culprit in being unable to fight for the win.

Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) surprised everyone by not only leading the first half of the race but piloted his Ducati almost as good and smooth as the days when he was riding the Yamaha M1.

It seems that whatever Ducati has done to his Desmosedici is working quite well for the Spaniard especially the new carbon fibre forks and the newly-installed aerodynamic fairings. Lorenzo crossed the line in P4.

Unsurprisingly, fellow Frenchman Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) was the top Yamaha rider after capitalising on not one but two opportunities when the two factory Yamaha riders from the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP outfit overshot the same turn during the Austrian GP.

Zarco kept his cool and crossed the finish line as not only the top Yamaha rider on a satellite bike but also the top independent rider.

The Movistar Yamaha duo, Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi seemed to carry very good paces earlier in the race. Due to tough competition especially from the factory Ducati and Honda machineries, they were left to salvage P6 and P7 respectively.

Almost five seconds behind Rossi was Alvaro Bautista (Pull&Bear Aspar Team) who had quite a lonely race. Right behind him was Loris Baz (Reale Avintia Racing) and wildcard rider for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team, Mika Kallio completed the top 10.

As of now, Marc Marquez seats on top of the 2017 MotoGP world championship standings with 174 points followed by today’s race winner Andrea Dovizioso with 158 points and Maverick Vinales with 150 points.

The MotoGP circus will now head to the United Kingdom for the Octo British Grand Prix which is going to be held at the legendary Silverstone Circuit on 27 August 2017. Stay tuned to Bikes Republic for more MotoGP updates.
