DBKL Sets Up Designated Motorcycle Zones at Traffic Lights

Special zones dedicated for motorcyclists to stop at traffic lights for added safety
Located at Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak

Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) has set up a designated stop zone at a few traffic lights around Kuala Lumpur specifically for motorcyclists. The Kuala Lumpur City Hall has incorporated this to ensure the safety of motorcyclists when riding in and around the city.

The mayor of Malaysia’s capital city, Datuk Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz stated that the purpose of this initiative was to create a safe area for bikes and riders to stop without interference or unwanted incidents from other motorists. For now, these motorcycle safety stop zones are located at some of the more congested roads in the city like Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak.

This seems to be a much better initiative addressing directly to the city’s hardworking folks on two wheels as compared to the proposal of closing down the streets at night so that “mat rempits” or motorcycle hooligans can race without repercussions.

The Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor once mulled for the city streets to be closed at night so that the “mat rempits” or “mat moto” can race as a form of controlled entertainment. This idea came to light with the intention to reduce the number of illegal races being organized in the city centre.

Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan also wanted to ban small capacity motorcycles known as “kapchais” or mopeds from entering the city in order to reduce carbon emissions and pollution. It’s not all bad news as he did however acknowledged that people still need these small motorcycles to go about their business and make a living especially those will lower incomes who can’t really afford other form of transport. All in all, we’re glad that the city in concerned with the safety of its people especially motorcyclists since they have a higher risk of getting into serious accidents as compared to other motorists on the road. Good job, KL!
