The wait is finally over as Yamaha’s Indonesian arm has finally taken the wraps off its new 250cc segment fighter, the YZF-R25.

Fondly referred to by Yamaha as its ‘Baby M1’ MotoGP bike, the YZF-R25 made its debut in Jakarta earlier today. The model will be produced in Yamaha’s Indonesian facility and will be released first in the Indonesian market this July. The firm has also set its sights at selling 12,000 units of the new model worldwide, but we reckon most will find its way into ASEAN markets as it was developed specifically for it. Rumours allege that Yamaha will next focus on making a larger 300cc version for the European market, but that remains to be seen for now.

Unlike its concept version, the production model features a complete set of street-legal lighting system, the centrepiece here being the LED illuminated taillights. The R25’s chassis is comprised of a steel frame, matched with a double-sided swing arm.

Encased under the scaffolding is a 249cc liquid-cooled four-stroke DOHC four-valve parallel twin cylinder engine with fuel injection. The mill features a specially engineered combustion chamber that generates a “tumble” of the air-fuel mixture, to which Yamaha claims in further aiding the mixture’s combustion. Like all other Yamaha twin-cylinder, this mill is also built from a DiaSil (Die Casting Aluminium-Silicon) construction, granting it with a lower weight and more efficient heat dissipation.

More importantly, the mill healthily develops about 35.5hp at 12,000rpm and maximum torque of 22.6Nm generated at 10,000rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed constant mesh manual transmission, whilst its fuel tank will hold up to 14 litres.

Weighing in at 166kg (laden), the R25 measures 2,090mm long, 720mm wide, 1,135mm tall, and its seat height measured at 780mm. In other words, its more or less similar in size with its direct rivals the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Honda CBR250.

In the Indonesian market, the YZF-R25 is priced slightly higher than its aforementioned rivals. We reckon that it will be same case when the bike enters its intended ASEAN markets including ours.
