Francesco Bagnaia took another step closer to hist maiden MotoGP world championship title after winning the Malaysian GP at Sepang International Circuit.

  • Bagnaia and Quartararo to take the championship battle to Valencia.
  • Bagnaia recorded his seventh win of the season.

Despite starting from the middle of the grid, the Ducati rider made a brilliant start to place himself just behind race leader, Jorge Martin at Turn 2 while Quartararo was up from 12th to fifth.

Martin made the early effort to widen the gap from Bagnaia but his effort were in vain as the Spaniard crashed out on lap seven.

While the disaster may be a gift for Bagnaia, the Italian got into an intense battle with Gresini’s Enea Bastianini who remained close behind the championship leader.

Bastianini made the move on lap 11 when he pounced under braking at Turn 3.

However, Bagnaia managed to find an extra speed to overtook his soon to be teammate at Turn 15 and maintained his lead until the chequered flag.

Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo managed to hold on 3rd spot to keep the championship fight alive ahead of Valencia.

Although there were some pressure from the emerging Marco Bezzecchi, the Frenchman managed to widen the gap at lap 15 to secured the much-needed podium.

Bagnaia continue to lead the championship with 258 points after claiming his seven win of the season while Quartararo is close behind with 235pts.

Both riders will take the fight to Valencia in November.

The Malaysia MotoGP fever officially returns to Sepang International Circuit after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Sepang International Circuit (SIC) officially welcomes the 2022 Malaysia MotoGP after a two-year absence.
  • SIC announced Damok as the official ‘wildcard’ rider in Moto3.

This time around, Petronas – the new official title sponsor – welcomes all two-wheel racing enthusiasts across the country to witness the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia 2022 happening on the 21 – 23 October.

The 23rd edition of the Malaysian GP also marks Petronas’s official debut as the new title sponsor after successfully reaching an agreement with MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports earlier this year.

During the launch, Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit (SIC), Azhan Shafriman Hanif, also announced the ‘wildcard’ slot for the upcoming MotoGP Malaysia goes to FIM Junior GP rider Syarifuddin Azman @ Damok, who will race with team VisionTrack.

“This year marks the first year of PETRONAS as the title sponsor for the Grand Prix. SIC is set to #WelcomeHome all the local and international motorsports fans to Sepang after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“With no Malaysian riders competing full season in the championship, I believe Damok will be the pull factor for Malaysian to cheer fellow Malaysian on the grid,” said Azhan.

Also present is Petronas Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz, who shares her excitement about the latest project.

“PETRONAS is excited to see the return of MotoGP to Malaysia, and it gives us great pride to headline the event, as the championship is synonymous with passion, innovation, pace and performance – values that resonate well with PETRONAS.

“As such, to celebrate the occasion, PETRONAS has lined up a series of thrilling family-friendly experiences on and off the track, including around KLCC which will be announced in due course.

The 2022 Official MotoGP pre-season test has concluded at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) on Sunday.

The event also marked the nation’s first international motorsport event after a two-year absence.

The two-day event , was dubbed to be successful by SIC and Dorna.

Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro clocked the fastest time in Day 1 before Gresini’s Enea Bastianini improved his lap to take Day 2.

The 24-year-old Italian did 1m 58.131s which is also a new track record.

“Overall feedback, everyone was pleased,” said SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif.

“The protocol that we put in place was very straightforward.

“Tests are being conducted every day, and in terms of participants, they are regularly checked.

“On the other side (spectators), we set up very well for us to get the fans in.

“After two years not having any events, the support is still very high; they are still passionate about the sport,” he said.

Anyhow, Azhan hoped that the success of the Sepang Test could set a benchmark for the Malaysian GP, in October.

“I hope this could be a benchmark for every other event, including the Malaysian GP. I hope this (Sepang Test) could be the spark that we need,” he added.

Asking whether the current rise of Covid-19 cases could impact the Malaysian GP in October, here is what Azhan had to say.

“We plan to run the Malaysian GP at 100 per cent capacity; however, it will depend on the ongoing scenario at that point of time.

“For example, if cases are still on the rise, then we have to shift and adapt our proposal to the government.

“Hopefully, by October, the country will go into the endemic stage so that the Standard Operation Procedure is loosened,” said Azhan.

Honda is scheduled to unveil its 2022 RC213V race bike on January 14, 2022.

However, the global unveiling will take place without six-time MotoGP world champion, Marc Marquez who is still nursing his injured eye.

Instead, Repsol Honda has confirmed that the event will continue with Pol Espargaro and LCR Honda riders, Takaaki Nakagami and Alex Marquez.

Missing out on the bike unveiling is not an issue for the Honda camp, however, Marquez’s latest diplopia (double vision) diagnosis is still a concern as there is no confirmation if he could make it on time ahead of the Sepang test in February.

The Spaniard suffered the injury at the 2021 Algarve GP, but HRC only reported it as a concussion before the team confirmed the rider is struggling with diplopia.

Nevertheless, we hope Marquez could still make it back just in time for the pre-season test in Sepang or at least given enough time to test out the updated RC213V.

Selepas dua bulan ditutup susulan pandemik Covid-19, Litar Antarabangsa Sepang (SIC) kini kembali beroperasi.

Menurut kenyataan FIM, Iannone gagal ujian doping setelah mendapati terdapat unsur penggunaan bahan terlarang jenis steroid.

  • The PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team won the 2019 Independent Team title at the 2019 Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

  • Franco Morbidelli finished in sixth ahead of Quarataro in seventh.

  • It was the perfect venue to win the title.

The PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team won the 2019 Independent Team title at the 2019 Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Team riders Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo’s results at the Malaysian round meant that the team heads the independent teams (better known as “satellite teams”) standings with a 77-point lead over the nearest challenger. The points lead is unassailable with just one more round to go.

It was certainly a poetic win since Malaysia is the team’s home ground and their first homecoming race.

The patriotic Malaysian crowd showed their all-out support not only for the MotoGP team, but for the riders in all three classes. However, hopes were high for Quaratararo’s first MotoGP victory as he had demolished the fastest lap record that had stood for four years. There were also great hopes for Morbidelli to capture another podium finish since he began the race in third position.

Alas, it was not to be.

Morbidelli finished sixth ahead of Quaratararo who was in seventh.

The former struggled with lack of acceleration with a bike in race trim, and was forced to make up time by braking harder for each turn. “We can’t complain,” he later said and was happy to finish in sixth, plus his teammate’s seventh to close out the independent teams title.

The latter lamented, “It was a really tough race, and I struggled a lot. My first lap was a disaster and I couldn’t stop the bike – which is an issue we haven’t had all weekend.”

The pair are now looking forward to scoring great results again at the closing race in Valencia.
