The Road Transport Department (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan/JPJ) has issued a warning to not decorate vehicles with decorative lights, especially during the festive season.

We as Malaysians are generally very creative and this spirit is brought to the point of decorating or customising our vehicles, regardless if they are cars, motorcycles, lorries, rickshaws, bicycles and so on. However, the authorities do not appreciate this creativity because they have a duty to ensure that each of our vehicles is safe not only for us, but also for all road users.

The Public Relations Officer of the Road Transport Department, Mohd Syahmi Abdul Latif explained that the act of decorating vehicles with decorative lights is wrong.

“Even if the intention is only to celebrate Ramadan, vehicle owners are warned to remove the decorative lights and return them to their original state or be fined.”

“In any case, the decision rests with the responsible officer. For this type of offence, the fine is usually between RM100 and RM200,” he said when contacted by Berita Harian.

He said this when commenting on a video uploaded to the Tik Tok application by a user who goes by the name @kaksuemeow, which shows her car fully decorated with decorative lights.

@kaksuemeow claimed she had encountered the police several times while driving in Bukit Bintang but was not fined.

“On the contrary, the police only showed thumbs up. I have already removed the decorative lights from the car but there is still a possibility that I will decorate them again. It took me about six hours to install all the lights and wrap them around my car,” she added.

The Road Transport Department (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan/JPJ) confirmed that the issue of the display of the owner’s photo being different from the actual owner’s information in the Malaysian Digital Driving License (e-LMM) was due to system maintenance.

JPJ also informed that there was no element of system abuse or identity theft in the issue.

JPJ in a statement today informed that the matter occurred when the information technology team was carrying out system maintenance work which was done periodically to ensure the sustainability of the MyJPJ system.

“The JPJ takes note and apologizes regarding the issue of the display of the e-LMM owner’s photo being different from the actual owner’s information. This department would like to inform that this matter has been immediately rectified and improved,” according to the statement.

JPJ assures that there is no element of system abuse or identity theft of driver’s license holders’ information. On the contrary, all information is protected and safe.

“JPJ will always improve the system from time to time to strengthen the delivery of the best digital services to the people,” according to him.

According to JPJ’s deputy director-general (Planning and Operations), Aedy Fadly Ramli, further inspection found that the riders never converted their L licence to a B-Full class licence.

“There are also those (high-powered motorcyclists) who do not possess these two licences (L and B-full) and they are not supposed to ride motorcycles with capacities of 250cc and above,” he said.

That said, Aedy Fadly advised riders to immediately complete their B-Full class licence to avoid stricter action.

During the operation, more than 3,000 motorcycles were inspected and action was taken against 786 of them committing various offences.

Our recommendation to our readers is to quickly check in portals such as https://www.myeg.com.myto see if have outstanding summonses. While you may be able to appeal to lower your fines in court, you may also run the risk of being fined higher. Plus, no one enjoys having the Police showing up at your doorstep or workplace to serve the warrant and arrest you.
