Peugeot Motorcycles

– Nama Peugeot bermula pada awal 1800-an.

Peugeot may be known for its four-wheelers these days but it is also one of the world’s oldest motorcycle company, tracing its origins back to 1898 when it produced its first machine. After a prolonged focus on scooters, the brand made a significant return to the realm of “true” motorcycles in 2022 with the introduction of the PM-01, which available in some markets in 125cc and 300cc variants.

Recent reports though are suggesting Peugeot is ready to expand its motorcycle lineup, evidenced by the filing of trademark applications for the names PM-02, PM-03, and PM-05 in the European Union. These trademarks signify a departure from the brand’s scooter line, hinting at the development of larger-displacement motorcycles.

As a backgrounder and for some context, the Peugeot legacy extends to the early 1800s when it commenced operations as a steel foundry in 1810. Evolving with the times, the company diversified into bicycles, automobiles, and motorcycles. Notably, Peugeot Motocycles operates independently from its automotive counterpart, with its ownership history witnessing a significant shift.

In 2014, a majority stake in Peugeot’s motorcycle and scooter division was acquired by the Indian conglomerate Mahindra. Subsequently, in 2019, Mahindra assumed full ownership, marking a definitive break from its original parent company. In 2023, Mahindra divested its controlling stake to the Munich-based equity firm Mutares, which currently oversees the brand.

Although the PM-01 300 model, featuring a 29 hp, 292cc single-cylinder engine sourced from China, was unveiled in 2022, its production is slated for later this year, with the 125cc version taking precedence. Both iterations boast a distinct headlight design reminiscent of a lion’s claw, paying homage to Peugeot’s iconic mascot. The engine powering the PM-01 300 is manufactured by Qianjiang, featuring specifications akin to those found in CFMoto’s 300CL-X engine.

Speculation surrounds Peugeot’s upcoming models, the PM-02, PM-03, and PM-05, as hinted by the trademark filings, suggesting the inclusion of larger-displacement and multi-cylinder motorcycles. Notably, these plans materialised post the transition of ownership, indicating a fresh direction for the brand.

Following the acquisition by Mutares, Peugeot forged a partnership with French electric motorcycle manufacturer DAB Motors. This collaboration aims to mass-produce DAB-branded electric motorcycles leveraging Peugeot’s manufacturing prowess, while also enabling Peugeot to develop its own line of electric motorcycles using DAB Motors’ technology. Consequently, there’s a possibility that one or more of the newly trademarked names could be associated with battery-powered bikes.

French motorcycle manufacturer Peugeot Motocycles is gearing up for significant growth in the Italian market, bolstered by a promising collaboration with the iconic British brand BSA.

  • This strategic partnership comes as Peugeot Motocycles enjoys newfound stability under the ownership of German firm Mutares.
  • Peugeot Motocycles, known for its retro-style and mid-capacity scooters, has recently expanded its Italian sales network with the addition of 43 new dealers, bringing the total to 144. The highlight of this expansion is Peugeot’s role as the exclusive distributor of the highly anticipated BSA Gold Star within the Italian market. This collaboration is a relatively new development, involving a series of ownership changes within Peugeot Motocycles.

Since the beginning of 2023, Peugeot Motocycles has been firmly under the ownership of the German company Mutares. Notably, Mahindra & Mahindra, the former owner of Peugeot, remains a key shareholder in the company and holds a significant stake in BSA as well. Leveraging this unique connection, Mahindra & Mahindra aims to capitalize on Peugeot’s enhanced distribution network to promote the new BSA Gold Star in Italy.

The BSA Gold Star, a retro-inspired machine, is equipped with a powerful 652cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine. With a respectable power output of 46hp @ 6,000rpm and 55Nm @ 4,000rpm, it promises a thrilling riding experience for enthusiasts.

In addition to this exciting partnership, Peugeot Motocycles is set to introduce the PM-01, a 125 cc naked bike aimed at the premium entry-level market in Italy.

The PM-01 features a distinctive front light cluster design inspired by Peugeot cars, adding a touch of elegance to the motorcycle. Furthermore, Peugeot plans to diversify its product portfolio in the first quarter of 2024 with the release of the PM-03, a 300cc motorcycle.

While Peugeot has chosen not to participate in EICMA 2023 in Milan, redirecting its trade fair investments toward Eastern markets, the company remains committed to innovation.

Peugeot Motocycles is actively expanding its electric vehicle range and is set to introduce the e-Streetzone scooter, demonstrating its dedication to sustainable mobility solutions. The company is also investing in the development of battery-powered motorcycles, signaling its commitment to the future of electric mobility.

  • The P2X range consists of a 125cc roadster and 300cc café racer.

“We have paid immense attention to the proportions of this city bike, studied every millimetre of each of its surfaces. P2X is THE new Peugeot motorcycle.”

Peugeot built their first motorcycle in 1898 although it did not go into production. However, motorcycle production began in 1901. Mahindra purchased a 51% controlling stake in 2014. Peugeot currently produces motorcycles and 3-wheelers ranging from 50cc to 500cc. Peugeot scooters are sold in 60 countries.
