MotoE

Ducati has officially begin the production of the V21L electric motorcycles that is set to compete at the 2023 MotoE World Championship.

  • Ducati is the official MotoE supplier for the 2023 season replacing Energica.
  • The Ducati V21L will be used by competing teams for the MotoE World Championship.

The Italian motorcycle company enters a new chapter in 2023 after they were signed as the new MotoE race bike supplier replacing Energica.

The Ducati V21L were unveiled last year after undergoing rigorous testing by a number of riders including Dcuati’s Michele Pirro, Chaz Davies and Alex De Angelis.

However, the V21L itself marks a big step for the Borgo Panigale outfit as they enter a new world of electrification and at the same time promoting sustainability and clean energy.

“The start of production of the Ducati MotoE is a historic moment for our company, which with this project is thoroughly studying the technologies of the future for the world of motorcycling,” said Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati.

He also lamented how the V21L will also marks the firm’s ambition towards building an electric road bike that delivers similar excitement to the current petrol powered machines.

“It is an important area of experimentation, in which we are investing to build know-how, so that we will be ready when battery technology should allow the creation of an exciting electric road bike with the weight, performance and range that enthusiasts expect from a Ducati.

“We are therefore embarking on this new adventure with the aim of developing the people and skills within the company to shape what the character of a future Ducati electric road bike might be.

“The MotoE project represents a decisive step for Ducati to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions on the product side, alongside research into synthetic fuels (eFuel) that can reduce the total CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines to zero.

“Environmental sustainability is something that all individuals and all companies must consider a priority if the delicate balance of the planet is to be preserved,” he added.

Fans of MotoE will get a closer look at the Ducati V21L race bike at Jerez Test between 6-8 March and Barcelona on 3-5 April.

Ducati has officially presented the all-new 2023 MotoE race bike, the V21L, at an exclusive event in Modena, Italy.

  • Ducati is the official manufacturer and supplier for MotoE beginning in 2023.
  • The V21L is Ducati’s first attempt at developing an electric motorcycle.

Overall, the V21L looks pretty much the same as the prototype that Ducati tested earlier this year.

However, the finished product looks refined, with Ducati adding a touch of colour to the electric race bike.

Nevertheless, like every Ducati in its stable, the V21L continue to represent racing DNA with carbon fibre components and exposed components to show off its glorious grain.

Although the V21L is the Italian company’s first attempt at a fully functional electric motorcycle, you can easily recognize that it is, in fact, a Ducati.

In addition, peak power is claimed at 110kW or approximately 150hp along with 140Nm and can reach a top speed of 275km/h.

The bike weighs a massive 225 kilograms, with half of the weight coming from the 18 kWh battery unit connected directly to the swingarm.

According to Ducati, the V21L also meets Dorna’s MotoE requirements of seven laps on a GP track.

Other key components include:

  • Ohlins NPX 25/30 pressurized fork
  • Ohlins TTX36 fully adjustable rear shock
  • Ohlins steering damper
  • specially-designed Brembo brakes

Also, Ducati claimed that the V21L features a specially-built double circuit liquid cooling system that allows the bike to get recharged without waiting for the battery pack, motor and inverter to cool off.

The race bike can be plugged directly into charge and can reach 80 per cent of full charge in just 45 minutes.

Ducati has already built and begun testing its 2023 MotoE race bike in Italy with Michele Pirro.

The test is crucial as Ducati will supply the entire MotoE World Cup grid beginning 2023 in a four-year deal.

Ducati will replace the outgoing Energica who previously supplied the entire grid since 2019 with a production-based Energica Ego Corse model.

However, Ducati takes over from 2023 will witness a brand-new, prototype-based sportbike that the Italian firm previewed in an artists’ rendering.

Despite there being talks the MotoE race bike will mark the Borgo Panigale first step into developing a production-based electric machine, Ducati has confirmed the MotoE model will stand alone as a race bike only.

Based on the rendered image, it is safe to assume the MotoE machine will share design similarities to the Ducati Panigale range.

“Right now, Michele Pirro is with MotoE in Misano, where our electric bike is going on the track for the first time,” said Ducati CEO, Claudio Domenicali.

While Ducati is all out excited with the new project, the announcement came as a surprise for everyone else especially since the Italian marquee has regularly dismissed the idea of moving forward with a high-performance electric motorcycle.

Ducati was recently announced as the official MotoE supplier beginning 2023 to 2026 by Dorna Sports in Misano.

The announcement quickly garnered attention as reports emerged that the big step into MotoE also signals the Italian firm intention to push for electric mobility.

However, in a recent interview, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali clarifies the MotoE project will not kickstart an electric production bike anytime soon.

“With the current technology, this is not possible.

“If we were to build an electric bike today, we would need to sacrifice some of the values of our product, like the sporting character and the lightness.

“Or we could do a light sportbike but with a very reduced range. So the idea is to start experimenting,” he said.

Nonetheless, Domenicali insists that the opportunity to provide a proper electric race bike for MotoE will act as a laboratory to study and develop the technology.

“We are interested in using MotoE as a laboratory to study and develop the technology.

“Technology of batteries, inverters, and the electric powertrain is evolving rapidly, and we want to be on the front row to experiment, develop, and be ready when the true race kicks off,” he added.

Interestingly, Ducati’s main objective is to create a lighter MotoE machine as the current race bike is 100 kilograms heavier than the Moto3 bike.

Ducati and Dorna Sports has announced a new partnership, with the Borgo Panigale factory is now the official supplier for the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup from 2023 to 2026.

The announcement came during a special press conference at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli attended by Ducati CEO, Claudio Domenicali and Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta.

It will also mark a new era for Ducati, taking a new challenge in electric racing which is the perfect test run for the Italian firm to adopt the same technology and innovation into a production bike.

“We are very proud of this agreement because, like every first, it represents a historic moment for our company.

“Ducati is always focused towards the future and every time it enters a new world it does so aiming to create the best-performing product possible.

“This agreement comes at the right time for Ducati, which has been studying electric powertrains for years, as it will allow us to develop within a controlled field: that of competition.

“We will work to give every participant in the FIM MotoE World Cup a high-performance, electric motorcycle and one made to exemplify being lightweight,” said Claudio Domenicali.

“Setiap kali berlumba, saya mahu menang.

Seandainya, semua kelas perlumbaan termasuk MotoE berjalan, Dorna memerlukan sekurang-kurangnya 1,300 kru.- BT Sport

  • The news for a street circuit to host the Indonesia MotoGP in 2021 was met with skepticism.

  • The uninformed were of the opinion it’ll be dangerous for MotoGP riders and spectators.

  • However, the plans have already been drawn up to include safety features and approved by Dorna and FIM.

Dorna and the FIM recently confirmed that Indonesia will hold a MotoGP and WorldSBK round beginning 2021. The site chosen is in Lombok.

However, when the announcement said that it’ll be the first MotoGP “street circuit,” the news attracted the same kind of negativity in social media as everything else. There were comments such as, “If it’s going to get riders killed then they shouldn’t ride there.”

Hey, guess what? Dorna and the FIM have better brains than armchair engineers.

The skepticisms were addressed directly by Mark Huges of MRK1 Consulting along with RoadGrip Motorsport. The two international companies were appointed by the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (IDTC) to plan, build and run the circuit.

“We are very conscious that when we announced this project there was a reasonable amount of scepticism about the concept of a street circuit,” Hughes said, during a presentation of the project at the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix.

“We have to make very clear that the track has been designed and will be built to the appropriate FIM safety standards for MotoGP.”

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta also said that they will not compromise with safety.

“We’ve always said that we don’t race in a street circuit, but this has all the facilities of a street circuit – in a middle of a ‘city’, all the hotels will be there – but with full security (safety) for the riders,” declared Ezpeleta.

The Lombok circuit isn’t like other “street circuits” that we know of, for example Monaco and Macao. Instead, it is purpose-built for racing but opened to the public after the race. That means it is opposite of Monaco and Macao where public roads are cordoned off for racing.

“The master plan for the resort [layout] was actually finished before we got involved. And then between Roadgrip, MRK1 and ITDC we’ve tweaked that track design,” Hughes said.

“We knew we couldn’t go in and entirely change it, there had already been too much invested in that, and with the support of Dorna and also the FIM we then made some small changes to accommodate the safety requirements for a Grade A license.”

“When you arrive for the race event it will be like arriving at any other MotoGP track. It will have all the infrastructure there,” Hughes added. “But a large percentage of that infrastructure would then come out in order to turn the track back into a road network for the resort for the rest of the year.”

Infrastructure at the track will also be turned over for public use when there are no races. For example, the pit building will be used as a conference centre.

So, this is why the track is called “something special.”
