  • Heaven MC, a club founded in 2015 is made up of predominantly Harley-Davidsons but is open to riders of all types of V-Twin powered motorcycles.
  • The President says it is a fun, non-profit motorcycle club.
  • The club mostly organizes local rides, but also rides to Thailand up to three times a year.

Motorcycle clubs (MCs) have been all the rage ever since the motorcycle was first introduced to the world. Case in point, the oldest motorcycle club in the world is the Yonkers Motorcycle Club of New York, which was founded in the year 1903, the same year that Harley-Davidson tried to sell its first models.

Since then, the world has seen the rise and rise of MCs either for leisure and socialization, or for criminal activities. Hells Angels, one of the most popular MCs in the world, immediately comes to mind when you put motorcycle clubs and criminal activities together in one sentence, but fact of the matter is, such MCs are the 1% of the world’s motorcycle riding community.

Malaysia too has a huge number of MCs, how many in total is unknown as there is no governing body that monitors and sanctions the MCs, but 100 clubs is easy if you consider the mopeds and scooter clubs.

One such club is the Heaven MC, a club founded in 2015 and is made up of predominantly Harley-Davidsons but is open to riders of all types of V-Twin powered motorcycles.

The club is headed by Nick Lum (top right), who took over as President in 2016 and is in charge of keeping the club’s 125 members occupied with weekend rides and such.

I had the pleasure of having a few brewskis with Nick last week to talk about the club he actively leads.

“The club only had 20 members when I joined with about 8 to 10 active riders. There was this one time where we organised a weekend ride but only me and this guy named Alex Locke showed up on Sunday morning. I remember us looking at each other and feeling clueless, and from then on Alex and I went out to actively recruit members,” said Nick that night at The Gasket Alley.

With a background in MNC marketing and the regional direct sales industry, Nick together with Alex, set out to to build and recruit members using the law of averages. “I knew that the more people we recruited, the higher the chances were of more people coming out to ride over the weekend. If we spoke to 50 people about Heaven MC and only 20% showed up over the weekend, that would be good enough for us as that is better than just two people showing up. These days we can easily get over 100 riders out for a ride, I would say we have done well,” explained Nick.

The 53 year old Nick is an active rider himself and owns a Harley-Davidson V-Rod Muscle, Road King Classic and a Street Glide CVO, and has gone through a number of Harleys in his riding career. “For me, riding a Harley-Davidson is akin to driving a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce. Not only are the bikes a symbol of status, but I also feel safe riding a Harley as I don’t need to ride fast to get satisfaction. Cars these days are way too expensive, a Harley on the other hand is also expensive for a motorcycle, but a lot more affordable and it changes your life.”

When asked about Heaven MC, the President says it is a fun, non-profit MC. The club’s most notables rides has been the inaugural ride to open the new Harley-Davidson PJ showroom where the club’s members were a part of about 500 Harley owners who rode together to celebrate the new showroom.

The club is open to all bikers who ride any type of V-twin motorcycle. There is no membership fees and everyone is welcome to join the weekend rides. The club actively supports events and community service and actively organizes fund raisers for any charity that needs it.

The club mostly organizes local rides, but also rides to Thailand up to three times a year. The club also recently held its annual CNY gathering to celebrate with their achievement and to share their upcoming plans. Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya also took part as a dealer to celebrate the annual event together with HOG of PJ to foster Harley-Davidson brotherhood. Anyone interested to join the club and its rides can get more information at the Heaven MC Facebook page.

  • The Tour Melaka 2018 Ride was held to promote Melaka as a fun destination for bikes as part of the Visit Melaka 2019 campaign.

  • As such, the organizers invited riders from Thailand and Singapore.

  • The ride took the participants to the most famous places and activities around Melaka over two days.

The Tour Melaka 2018 Ride was held in December last year as part of the state of Melaka’s promotion.

The ride was organized by Fast Bikes Club (FBC) with the Chairperson of the state of Tourism, Heritage and Culture Board of Melaka’s.

It was organized to promote the Visit Melaka 2019 promotion. As such, the Melaka Tourism, Heritage and Culture Board hopes that the state will become a destination for bikes from around the region.

As such, bikers from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand joined the ride. The event was sponsored by KTM Malaysia and Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya (HDPJ), among others.

Day 1

A number of participants began the ride from HDPJ. The sky opened up as the convoy got going but everyone reached the Ayer Keroh R&R safely. Another group was waiting at that location to join up.

The group then rode to the Mudzaffar Hotel near the Melaka Planetarium and just off the busy Ayer Keroh main road.

Participants regrouped later that evening for dinner. They were escorted by the Traffic Police to the Halia Inc. restaurant just opposite The Stadthuys at Bandar Hilir (city centre), and not far from Jonker Walk.

The chief organizer, Cik Nini, welcomed the riders and briefed everyone on the mission of the ride. They were given the opportunity to experience what Melaka has to offer to visitors, namely the heritage, culture and fun activities.

Afterwards, dancers came on stage to present traditional Malay dances.

After the dinner, participants were taken to the Melaka River Cruise jetty to board the ferries. A guide skillfully presented the history and culture of Melaka as they cruised on the river, enjoying the cool air and awed by the sights.

Day 2

Another day of fun awaited the riders the next day. It kicked off with the Mudzaffar Hotel launching their own brand of ikan asam pedas(sour and spicy sauce fish). Next, the CEO of the Taming Sari promoted the tower, when he also chastised the media for not promoting his facility.

The ride was flagged off from the hotel afterwards and headed to Masjid Lama Rumbia. There, the riders worked hand-in-hand (gotong-royong) to clean the mosque’s grounds.

From there it was off to lunch (asam pedas again) before heading to the Taming Sari for a ride. The viewing lifted off ground level to about 100 metres to offer the occupants a bird’s eyeview Melaka city.

The riders were then escorted to Klebang for a taste of the original coconut shake. The location was busy as heck, as usual but they received their drinks in the end to cool off.

After that, the convoy was escorted to Kampung Sungai Petai for another community service and games with the vilagers.

The ride committee and villagers held traditional games such as tarik upih, tiup tepung, bowling using coconuts, “football” with a coconut replacing the ball while the participants wore sarung, and musical chairs.

Lastly, prizes were handed out to the villagers and a lucky draw was held which included the villagers and ride participants.

  • The Kingz Motorcycle Group celebrated their 3rd Anniversary recently.

  • About 100 riders flagged off the MG’s clubhouse in Sentul.

  • The group rode through KL to Putrajaya and back to Jalan Tun Razak to complete the proceedings.

The Kingz Motorcycle Group celebrated their 3rd Anniversary recently.

The MG started their ride from their club house in Sentul in the afternoon. Nearly 100 riders took part. A great number of Kingz MG members are well-known throughout the motorcycling fraternity.

But what better way to celebrate a motorcycle group’s anniversary other than creating some heavy metal thunder. It must’ve been a proud day for the members as they rode as one, the wind blowing through their “colours” (the official group vests).

The group first rode from HDPJ through Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya. The riders stopped for some beautiful photographs while taking a short breather and jesting with each other. The majestic buildings of Malaysia’s administrative centre provided a wonderful background to the chrome, shiny paint jobs and rumble of a hundred Harley-Davidsons.

They adjourned from Putraja and rode to G-Tower, situated along Jalan Tun Razak for the remainder of the evening.

There, the riders were visibly elated and on a high from being in a brotherhood. They even poured water on each other after a group photoshoot.

A buffet dinner was served as they were serenaded by a live band who belted out classic “road trip” hits.

With support from Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya, the official distributor of Harley-Davidson in Malaysia, Kingz MG celebrated their 3rdAnniversary by cutting a cake decorated with the group’s name.

We congratulate and salute Kingz Motorcycle Group for bringing the thunder among the riders. May your club flourish and continue to ride for many years to come.

  • Shadowfax Motorcycle Club Malaysia celebrated Deepavali by hosting an open house.

  • Motorcycle clubs and groups from all over Malaysia and Brunei attended.

  • Shadowfax also invited underprivileged kids.

Shadowfax Motorcycle Club Malaysia held their annual Deepavali Open House on 25thNovember 2018.

Since founded by Dato’ Anand in 2015, the MC has been racking up the mileage on their beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The group are pure Harley enthusiasts. The founder himself started riding in 1998 and has been collecting Harley-Davidson’s anniversary models including the recent 115thAnniversary CVO Limited.

Motorcycle clubs and groups from Brunei, Johor, Penang, Perak and Central Malaysia attended the open house. The scene was of harmony while rolling thunder from Harleys echoed through the street of Damansara Perdana. It was a display of brotherhood and sisterhood irrespective of race and religion.

Shadowfax MC also invited 27 children from Pusat Kanak-kanak Istimewas, Lagenda Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Klang, Selangor. The MC distributed gifts of school necessities and red packets to the younglings.

Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya (HDPJ) participated in the joyous occasion of being the rendezvous point for Harley riders before heading to the open house. A pack of 25 Harleys left the dealership for the celebrations.

“HDPJ always supports band of brothers and sisters from all over the winding road. As long as it is a Harley, we are family,” according to HDPJ’s Press Release.

  • Heaven MC attended a Harley-Davidson Petaling Jaya (HDPJ) event in 3Damansara.

  • HDPJ has a showcase in the 3Damansara Mall.

  • President of Heaven MC Nick Lum confirms their love to support events.

Motorcycling lifestyle needs both the dealership and its customer base to support one another. A failure at either end will inadvertently spell the end of the brand’s presence. This is why Heaven MC showed their support to the Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya (HDPJ) showcase at 3Damansara Mall.

The riders of Heaven MC first met up at Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya in The Gasket Alley for some breakfast before riding a short distance to 3Damansara Mall. There, there were provided a preferred parking space. The presence of the bikes and riders gave shoppers the opportunity to view not just the Harleys but also the lifestyle that comes with the brand.

HDPJ also made it possible for us to speak to Nick Lum, the President of Heaven MC.

“The focus of Heaven MC is to support public events, for example, launches, weddings, and so forth, to provide the ‘boom’ effect to the public.”

“Heaven MC has been around for three-and-half years. We noticed wherever the group goes on Harleys, there is a lot of publicity and people would look at the group. Putting that into marketing perspective, there’s impact.”

“We were invited by HDPJ to bring 25 to 30 bikes to show the impact to the public. We did the last event for Skybar in Traders Hotel three weekends ago during MotoGP. The crowd was really excited when they saw Harleys coming. In short, the Harley brand, the soul, the sound, the looks, the culture attract public (attention), so it works. Conventional events as we know (are with) balloons, clowns, fireworks, firecrackers, dancers… To me those are conventional events.”

“As a club, Heaven MC found that it’s a better reason to ride (rather than) going around to eat every weekend.”

“Charities are good but there are so many other clubs doing it already, so we do it once a year.”

“So far so good (for Heaven MC). We have about 120 registered members. We can get up to 25 riders on average with short notice. Given enough time, we can confidently get 50 to 60 riders to join the ride or event. However if the organizer wants a bigger impact, we can invite our friends in other bike clubs to join forces to bring it to 80 to 100 bikes, easily.”

“The biggest impact for Heaven MC was when Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya opened. We joined forces with HOG PJ and managed to put in 500 bikes for the launch event. That was a success. It basically gave us the confidence to hold any other future events.”

“If you need our support during our events, you can look up Heaven MC. We are friendly.”

There you have it. It’s good to have bikers who attend events to lend support to them, while having some fun themselves. But as Nick said, don’t worry, these are friendly bikers.

  • HDPJ supported the ride by providing technical support and Lucky Draw vouchers.

The setting of Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya (HDPJ) has truly benefitted Harley owners. As part of a service to owners, HDPJ played host to Kingz Motorcycle Group (MG) as a stop on their wide-ranging ride over the Malaysia Day weekend, from 14th to 16th September 2018.

The ride is part of a larger event called Eat, Travel, Ride International 2.0. The program is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia, among others. The ride covers Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Terengganu.

Kingz MG’s riders began the ride at the KL Tower and proceeded to Muzium Negara (National Museum) for a photoshoot and rode to HDPJ afterwards for another round of photoshoot.

HDPJ supported the ride by providing a support truck and technical personnel in addition to Lucky Draw vouchers for the ride’s annual dinner when the group reaches Kuala Terengganu. HDPJ Assistant Director, Chris Ruxton presented the group a plaque as a sign of support for the brotherhood.

It was a straight shot to Cherating for lunch before hooking up with Iron Head MG in Kemaman, Terengganu. The group stopped for the night at Marang.

Other activities planned for the ride were stops and photoshoots at unique attractions in the East Coast such as the Masjid Kristal (Crystal Mosque), Pantai Penarik, lunch at KT Durian Burung, an orphanage, Pantai Monica, all in Terengganu.

The total ride distance is 460 km, return. There were more than one hundred participants, not counting those from Iron Head MG.

  • Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya’s owners group chapter, HOGPJ organized a ride for some great food over the weekend.

  • Nearly 100 participants showed up to the ride to Segamat, Johor for the famous udang galah (crayfish).

  • The ride was expertly marshalled from start to finish.

Things are up and fully for Harley-Davidson of Petaling Jaya (HDPJ) and their riders’ chapter, Harley Owners Group PJ (HOGPJ).

Harley-Davidson owners can always look forward to many fun activities that are organized by HOG and their respective dealerships. So far, there’ve been many such rides that started from HDPJ based at The Gasket Alley.

But as Malaysian bikers, there are two things that we love: Motorcycle and food. Not necessarily in that order. As such, HOGPJ organized a “food ride” this weekend. Called “HOGPJ Udang Galah Ride,” the participants rode to the sleepy town of Segamat in Johore for the famous udang galah (crayfish) lunch.

The organizers had targeted 75 participants, but the number swelled to nearly 100 just prior to the pre-ride briefing. While most riders are experienced in convoy riding, the HOG marshals knew they had their job cut out for them and they took their tasks seriously. Harley-Davidson and HOG are nothing if not for their expertly organized rides.

After the marshals were briefed, it was the participants next. The briefing was quite detailed as compared to other rides we’ve covered, but the main difference was the Head Marshal leading the participants in a warm up session. They guided through some stretching and deep breathing exercises.

From HDPJ it was a straight ride to the Ayer Keroh RnR for the Sportsters to fill up their peanut tanks. The participants were disciplines and adhered to HOG’s recommended convoy etiquette.

Refueling was a fast process as the marshals ran a “pit stop” refueling style: The owner left his/her bike with the marshals, went to pay for the fuel, and the marshals filled up the bike.

We continued our way to Segamat by exiting the North-South Expressway at the Tangkak exit. The pace was good as it kept us cool despite the sun particularly hot on this day. We were also escorted by the Traffic Police thus we didn’t have to stop and get hot. Indeed, we were told during the briefing that HOG will always notify the police prior to their rides.

We reached RZ Restoran just in time for lunch. Participants parked their bikes quickly to get out of the sun and helped themselves to the iced drinks.

The restaurant had already set out the food for us in the air-conditioned section, consisting of the all-famous udang galah in fried, sambal and lemak styles, plenty of tasty vege, crispy fried chicken, fried fish, and much more. A few Harley riding friends of this writer once remarked that the Malaysia HOG unofficial mantra is “Eat to Ride, Ride to Eat,” certainly in relation to our love for great food, and that passion to ride to faraway places just for a meal. Can’t argue with that.

We rode back the same way we came from after lunch and the customary group photos. Again, the group kept the formation as tight as possible on the highway until the Seremban RnR before we went our separate ways.
