After months of anticipation, BMW has officially unveiled its latest offerings for 2024—the R12 and R12 nineT. Classic Roadsters and Cruisers with a Heritage Twist

BMW Motorrad’s R nineT, introduced in 2013, marked a departure from conventional roadsters by blending classic motorcycle design with modern technology and customizable features. The new R12 nineT continues this legacy, embracing “The Spirit of nineT,” aiming to seamlessly follow the success of its predecessor while embodying an archetypal look, timelessness, and extensive customization options. Meanwhile, the R12 embraces “The Spirit of Easy,” with a classic cruiser for cool and relaxed biking.

Boxer Engine with Modern Enhancements

The heart of the R12 nineT and R12 models is the authentic and robust boxer engine, boasting a redesigned airbox and twin-flow rear silencer. The air/oil-cooled boxer engine, with a capacity of 1,170cc, delivers 109 hp at 7,000 rpm in the R12 nineT and 95 hp at 6,500 rpm in the R12. The left-mounted “Twin Pipe” exhaust system adds a touch of classic sportiness to both roadster and cruiser enthusiasts.

Redesigned Tubular Bridge Steel Spaceframe

A highlight of the new models is the one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe, a departure from the previous R nineT series. This new frame not only reduces weight but also provides a cleaner and more classic appearance. The rear frame, also tubular steel, is bolted to the main frame.

In May, BMW provided a sneak peek of the R12 nine T, which will be the successor to the decade-old R nine T and its various iterations. Furthermore, a second variant, simply named R12, has been unveiled through Type-Approval documents, indicating compliance with UN-ECE standards, allowing its sale in Europe and the UK.

The R12 is set to embrace a more cruiser-style design, positioning itself just below the R18 in BMW’s lineup, and offering competition for motorcycles like Harley-Davidson’s Nightster. This expectation is reinforced by statements made by BMW’s former head of design, Edgar Heinrich, who, when asked by a European journalist about the potential for more R12 models, cryptically replied, “I’m not allowed to talk about future bikes, but maybe that’s a good idea.” This response is widely interpreted as a confirmation of future R12 variants.

The recently released documents also reveal the first official specifications for the R12 nine T. Notably, it will offer three different power outputs to accommodate European regulations and adhere to A2 bike requirements in the UK.

BMW R18 Malaysia

Both the R12 and R12 nine T will share key components, including the engine and frame. Under the hood, you’ll find BMW’s 1170cc air-cooled boxer twin engine, capable of delivering a maximum of 107.3bhp in the top-tier R12 nine T model. This power is achieved at 7000rpm, 250rpm lower than the current R nine T’s peak, and is coupled with a maximum torque of 115Nm at 6500rpm. A second variation of the R12 nine T will offer a 94bhp & 109Nm engine to meet license requirements, and a restricted 47bhp version has also received Type-Approval.

Conversely, the cruiser-style R12 is exclusively available with the 94bhp and 47bhp engine options. These documents hint at an impressive top speed for the full-power R12 nine T, estimated at 134mph.

Both the R12 and R12 nine T share a 1520mm wheelbase, indicating their shared chassis and engine. However, the R12 is longer at 2200mm compared to the R12 nine T’s 2130mm. This is partly due to a larger 19-inch front wheel on the R12, complemented by a smaller 16-inch rear wheel, which contributes to its cruiser-style stance. In contrast, the R12 nine T boasts a sportier appearance with 17-inch wheels at both ends.

The R12’s wheels are also narrower than the R12 nine T’s, featuring a 100/90×19 front and 150/80×16 rear tire, as opposed to the R12 nine T’s 120/70×17 front and 180/55×17 rear tires.

Additional differences in dimensions reveal that the R12 is 40mm narrower across the handlebars but has handlebars that are 40mm taller compared to the R12 nine T. Both models will offer the option of front cowls.

In terms of weight, the R12 nine T is the lighter of the two, tipping the scales at 222kg with a full tank of fuel, while the R12 cruiser is slightly heavier at 229kg in the same state. BMW enthusiasts can anticipate more R12 variants in the future, including replacements for the R nine T Scrambler and R nine T Urban G/S, as well as a touring cruiser model equipped with panniers.

Several reports have emerged online about BMW supposedly working on a smaller sibling to the R18 cruiser. 

The latest rumours include images that were supposedly taken in Australia of the smaller cruiser going through homologation tests. 

Dubbed the R12 by the world’s press (but not by BMW), the smaller cruiser has apparently retained the overall shape of the R18 including the headlight, the wide handlebars and the front. 

Credible sources are mentioning that the R12 will weigh in at about 229kg, and will have a 19-inch front and a 16-inch rear wheel. This puts it squarely in the same league as some Harley-Davidsons, namely the Nighster, the Street Bob and the Softail. 

As for power, the word is that the R12 will use the same 1170cc boxer engine that powers the R12 NineT Scrambler. Power from that engine is rated at 95bhp and 110Nm of torque. 

If the engine proves to be right, then you can expect the brakes to be largely similar as well. According to German publications, the R12 will use twin front discs with ABS. 

BMW has yet to mention anything about the R12 or acknowledge its existence, but hey, you know what they say, where there is smoke, there is fire. 

Lets hope its more comfortable to ride than the R18.

Baru-baru ini, motosikal ‘adventure’ itu kembali menjadi topik perbualan di kalangan peminat dua roda apabila rakan media Careta memuat naik gambar yang memaparkan beberapa unit R 1300 GS kelihatan di tanah air dengan nombor plat Malaysia. 

Meskipun ramai yang berpendapat model itu akan dilancarkan tidak lama lagi namun menurut sumber, R 1300 GS dalam gambar yang tular itu sebenarnya dalam perjalanan ke Chiang Mai, Thailand bagi tujuan latihan. 

Sementara itu, kami juga diberitahu bahawa R 1300 GS itu hanya akan dilancarkan untuk pasaran Malaysia tahun depan. Namun buat masa ini, belum dapat dipastikan spesifikasi atau pakej yang akan disertakan untuk pelanggan di sini.

Untuk rekod, BMW, R 1300 GS kini dikuasakan enjin boxer 1300cc dengan sistem penyejukan cecair/air yang berupaya menghasilkan 145hp pada 7,750rpm dan 149Nm pada 6,500rpm. Seperti model BMW terbaru, model ini juga dilengkapi teknologi BMW ShiftCam (variable valve timing). 

Pembangunan R 1300 GS juga memfokuskan pada peningkatan tork dan BMW mendakwa sebanyak 130Nm tork akan hadir antara 3,600 dan 7,800rpm sekaligus memastikan daya tarikan kekal kuat dalam pelbagai senario menunggang. 

Meskipun enjin lebih besar dengan bore dan stroke diletakkan pada 106.5mm x 73mm namun penggunaan bahan api sama efisien seperti R 1250 GS. Menurut BMW, R 1300 GS ini juga boleh mencapai kelajuan maksima 200km/j dan boleh pergi 0-100km/j dalam tempoh 3.39 saat. 

Lebih menarik, BMW R 1300 GS ini juga 12 kilogram lebih ringan berbanding generasi terdahulu.

BMW Motorrad made headlines earlier this year when they teased the next-generation R nineT. However, at the time, the German marquee did so without revealing the technical details.

The R12 nineT, continuing the legacy of BMW’s neo-retro roadster theme, seems to be a direct successor to the beloved R nineT, incorporating modern suspension and brakes with the timeless air-cooled boxer twin engine.

Notable design elements pay homage to the iconic R90S of the 1970s. Despite BMW’s century-long motorcycle-making history since the R32 of 1923, the “nineT” name remains a testament to its enduring popularity since its introduction a decade ago, marking 90 years of BMW motorcycle production.

In terms of performance, the sportier R12 nineT retains the same 107hp @ 7,000 rpm from its 1,170cc air-cooled boxer twin as its predecessor, albeit with a slight change in the rev range. Torque peaks at 115Nm @ 6,500 rpm.

On the other hand, the non-nineT “R12” model has been type-approved in 94hp and 47hp versions (presumably to comply with A2 license laws in the UK), with no full-powered, 107 hp variant.

The R12 model achieves a top speed of 200km/h, while the 94hp version reaches 210km/h, and the restricted 47hp versions cap out at around 160km/h.

In terms of dimensions, the R12 nineT is slightly longer than its predecessor, with a height difference of less than half an inch.

Both the R12 and R12 nineT share the same twin-exit exhaust system, and their weights are quite similar, with the R12 nineT coming in at 221kg while the R12 is 230kg.

The most significant difference between the two models lies in their wheel and tire sizes, indicating that the R12 takes a more cruiser-style approach.

The standard R12 nineT retains the same wheel sizes as the current model, while the R12 features a narrower, wire-spoke 19-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear wheel.

While additional details are expected to be unveiled in the coming month, it’s worth noting that BMW may also introduce other R12 nineT derivatives, potentially replacing the Scrambler and Urban G/S models.

At the culmination of Day 1, the Top 10 riders were handpicked to engage in a heart-pounding round of skill assessments on Day 2, all vying for the exclusive opportunity to participate in the ‘Follow the Trails’ (FTT) Tour of the International BMW GS Trophy in Namibia, slated for 2024. As a mark of their achievements, the Top 10 finalists were presented with exclusive prizes, generously provided by the official tire sponsor, Metzeler.

Following two grueling days of intense competition, which included an evening of fine dining and musical performances at the ‘GS Fireplace’ dinner, the standout performers emerged as the victors, securing their spots on the coveted FTT Namibia 2024 tour.

BMW Motorrad has taken a significant step by ordering a temporary halt in the sale of all new and pre-owned gas-powered motorcycles across North American dealerships, just days before the much-anticipated unveiling of the next-generation R 1300 GS.

However, the embargo on sales does not extend to the CE 04, BMW’s electric scooter, which remains unaffected.

The company, in an official statement, clarified that this decision is unrelated to safety concerns but rather stems from an issue pertaining to the materials used in the Evaporative System (EVAP) of their motorcycles.

The EVAP system’s primary function is to capture fuel vapors and reintroduce them into the engine’s intake, thereby preventing their release into the environment.

It is important to note that this ‘stop sale’ directive is considered temporary in nature. However, BMW has not provided a definitive timeframe for the resumption of sales.

Furthermore, the company has clarified that this decision is voluntary and has not been mandated by any regulatory authority. Nevertheless, dealerships are obligated to adhere to the directive, ensuring compliance with BMW’s initiative.
