790 Duke

Just a few months ago, CFMoto unveiled its NK-C22 concept motorcycle that was likely to make it to production anytime soon.

  • CFMoto to introduced the 800NK roadster.
  • Features KTM 799cc LC8c parallel twin-cylinder engine.

The naked-type roadster were believed to be powered by KTM’s 799cc parallel twin-cylinder engine.

However, latest development has confirmed that a production model, resembling the NK-C22 concept already in the works with the finished product bearing the 800NK name emerged in a new type-approval documents filed in China.

The documents not only showed one but two versions of the 800Nk are to be made.

Based on the single photo shared, the 800NK looks like a proper roadster with sharp bodyworks and exposed frame.

Interestingly, the production model mirrors most of the NK-C22 features except a couple of key changes with the main alteration is the adoption of a conventional double-sided swingarm.

Similar to other CFMoto machines, the 800NK is likely designed by Kiska Studios, the same company responsible for many KTM’s in recent years.

CFMoto also claimed that the KTM-powered 800NK makes 99hp from the 799cc LTM LC8c engine. The same mill also powered CFMoto’s 800MT adventure motorcycle.

According to the documents, both iterations of the 800NK also shares the same key figures including engine and other components. They also have similar parts, including an USD front fork,  J.Juan radial-mount brake callipers and TFT instrument display.

However, we expect the higher-spec 800NK to feature an additional electronic package, possibly similar to KTM’s 790 Duke range.

The all-new CFMoto 800NK is likely to hit the global market in 2023.

Ciri lain ditawarkan termasuk:

  • fork depan WP Apex 43mm dengan jarak pergerakan 200mm.
  • tayar Pirelli Scorpion STR.
  • tangki 20L.

KTM has remarkably announced the return of the 790 Adventure for 2023 alongside the 790 Duke.

  • KTM 790 Adventure makes the same 95hp and 88Nm of peak torque.
  • KTM’s Chinese partner, CFMOTO is in charge of manufacturing the 790 Adventure range.

The middleweight adventure bike revival is largely thanks to KTM’s Chinese partnership, CFMOTO who’s in charge of building the 2023 790 Adventure and the 790 Duke.

Mechanically, the 2023 KTM 790 Adventure makes the same 95hp and 88Nm however the throttle body has been reworked for a cleaner response.

Also new on the 2023 model year includes a new airbox and friction plates.

KTM also claimed that there is a 20 percent increase of rotating mass which boost the bike’s cornering ability. KTM also equipped the 790 Adventure with a knock control sensor.

However, the biggest update for the 2023 model is a new 6D IMU that features Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control, ABS, Motor Slip Regulation and riding modes.

Additionally, the revived 790 Adventure is also fitted with KTM’s Quickshifter+ as standard.

Other notable features include 43mm WP Apex forks with 200mm of travel, Pirelli Scorpion STR tires and a 20L fuel tank that can take you up to 450km of range.

Namun, spesifikasi lain termasuk bahagian suspensi masih sama seperti model terdahulu termasuk fork depan WP Apex 43mm.

Following a short hiatus, KTM has decided to reintroduced the original 790 Duke for 2023.

  • KTM 790 Duke makes a comeback for 2023.
  • Powering the 790 Duke is the same LC8c mill that makes 105hp and 82.3Nm.

KTM previously replaced the 790 Duke with a bigger 890 Duke in 2021 to meet the tighter emission standard while also increasing the peak power.

However, in an interesting development, the returning Original Scalpel will also eplaced the base 890 Duke while the up-spec 890 Duke R remains in the lineup for 2023.

Also, the 790 Duke revival comes with the help of KTM’s partnership with CFMOTO who’s now in charge of the 799cc LC8c engine.

That said, the parallel-twin mill continue to make 105hp @ 9,000rpm and 82.37Nm @ 8,000rpm.

Nonetheless, it’s important to take note that the reborn 790 Duke comes with a number of exciting updates for 2023.

In addition, the 790 Duke now features new Track mode joining the existing Sport, Street and Rain mode. There’s also nine levels of lean sensitive traction control, anti-wheelie, launch control and three throttle response settings.

Also new on the 2023 790 Duke includes Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) and Supermoto mode.

Suspending the 2023 790 Duke is the same non-adjustable 43mm WP Apex front fork and a preload-adjustable Apex shock.

  • We will test and review the KTM 790 Adventure and KTM Adventure R in Morocco later this week.

  • Both bikes were introduced in EICMA 2018.

  • They expand the 790 range which also includes the 790 Duke.

The 2019 KTM 790 Adventure and KTM 790 Adventure R were unveiled at the 2018 EICMA show in November. Their introduction expands the 790 family, following the launch of the 790 Duke in Malaysia back in June 2018.

However, no one has ridden or reviewed the two new 790 Adventures as they are yet launched worldwide. But fear not, because BikesRepublic.com will be present to test ride both bikes during the International Media Launch in Morocco, courtesy of KTM Malaysia.

Till then, we can offer some introduction.

Engine

Both bikes use the same LC8c 799cc ultra-compact parallel-Twin as the 790 Duke. However, bearing the “Adventure” name means they are offroad capable, hence the different engine tune. Instead of the 103 bhp and 87 Nm in the Duke, the Adventure’s engine produces 94 bhp and 88 Nm.

LC8c engine

KTM 790 Adventure

The 790 Adventure is a more road-biased dual-sport model. As such, it boasts a shorter suspension travel than the 790 Adventure R (200 mm vs. 240 mm), although taller than the 790 Duke (200 mm vs. 140 mm front/150 mm rear). The changes in suspension also gives it an 850 mm high seat height.

The forks are non-adjustable while the rear shock is adjustable for preload only. 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels are fitted with Avon Trailrider tyres.

Besides the suspension, it has a 20-litre fuel capacity. Instead of enlarging the fuel tank, the extra fuel is carried low in front of the engine. This way, the bike keeps its low centre of gravity. The “low” fuel tank is impact resistant.

KTM 790 Adventure R

The 790 Adventure R is a more off-road biased dual-sport motorcycle. Because of that, KTM it features longer-travel suspension. Moreover, it’s the only KTM 790 model to have fully-adjustable suspension. The rear shock is adjustable for spring preload for low- and high-speed compression and rebound damping. The forks, on the other hand, are adjustable for compression and rebound damping.

The 790 Adventure R’s suspension has 240 mm of travel on both ends. Consequently, the seat height goes up to 880 mm.

This model also uses 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, but they are fitted with Metzeler Karoo 3 tyres.

Last but not least, the KTM 790 Adventure R also has a 20-litre fuel capacity and has the fuel tanks mounted like the Adventure.

  • The KTM 790 Duke, nicknamed as “The Scalpel” has arrived in Malaysia.

  • It is engineered for daily riding, daily canyon blasting and/or track carving.

  • The bike is compact and light!

KTM had hit pay dirt with 690 Duke since its introduction in 2012. But since the middleweight market had grown to sub-800cc engine capacities, it is time KTM continue that legacy with the 790 Duke.

KTM had pumped in large resources into developing the 2018 KTM 790 Duke. Hence, it took four years and some 18 prototypes to get it right.

But here it is, “The Scalpel” has arrived on our shores and Bikes Republic were able to have a first look. Also, please click on the link below for pricing and other details of the bike.

New KTM 790 Duke now in Malaysia – Priced at RM64,800!

In creating the bike, the giant Austrian manufacturer looked long and hard at a number of criteria. The new bike has to do well as an everyday commuter, a weekend canyon carver and must embody KTM’s READY TO RACE spirit hence be track-ready. Not an easy task.

As such, it has to combine the lightness and agility of a single-cylinder (i.e. 690 Duke) and the immediate punch of a Twin.

Their solution was groundbreaking in their history. In order to achieve the above brief, KTM created an all-new parallel-Twin which they call the LC8c (liquid-cooled, 8-valve, compact). A parallel-Twin (or all inline engines for that matter) is the best compromise between weight-savings, compactness and power.

Please indulge us: A single-cylinder engine is fast-revving but will be too high-strung and vibey if its performance is pushed to the edge of its envelope. On the other hand, a V-Twin like KTM’s 1290 flagship models are powerful but the Vee-angle of the cylinders needs more space fore-to-aft, heavier and are more complex. The 1301cc 75-degree V-Twins are fine in the big bikes as those bikes are meant to be graced with 160 to 180 bhp. Additionally, since a “wide” V-Twin engine is longer, the swingarm had be to made shorter in order to compensate for the quest to achieve an overall short wheelbase. Remember, a shorter wheelbase promotes agility.

Therefore, the LC8c is one of the most compact engines around. The compactness allows for an overall lighter bike, optimal engine placement in the frame for likewise optimal weight distribution, and the swingarm could be made longer (for better road-holding and stability) while still achieving a shorter wheelbase.

The 799cc, DOHC LC8c puts out 105 bhp at 9000 RPM and 87 Nm at 8000 RPM. While it is not the highest figure among its peers in the sub-800cc segment, the KTM 790 Duke has a lithe dry weight of only 169 kg. That equals a weight-to-power ratio of 1.61 kg/1 bhp.

To quell engine vibrations, KTM engineers gave the LC8c two counterbalancers: One in its customary position front of the crankshaft and the other between the cams.

Speaking of cams, they are assembled instead of one-piece forged units for more weight savings. The lifters’ finger followers are coated with DLC (diamond-like coating) for longevity.

Making our way down, the clutch system uses KTM’s signature PASC (Power and Assist Slipper Clutch). As the name suggests, the clutch plates are forced together harder during acceleration allowing the rider to operate the lever with just one finger, while the slipper function separate the plates under hard deceleration of overly excited (or panicky) downshifting to eliminate rear wheel hop or locking up.

In the chassis department, the all-new chrome-molybdenum tube frame is laser-cut and robot-welded for close tolerances. Unlike the steel ladder frames of other KTMs, the 790 Duke’s frame features a beam on either side on top of the engine, while another two extends downwards to hold the front of the engine. This design is strong, simple and lightweight; in fact, this new frame is the among the lightest of all current production motorcycles of the same class. The steering geometry is kept at an aggressive 24 degrees.

The subframe is a single piece cast aluminium unit. This is where the airbox is located, akin to KTM’s dirtbikes. Positioning the airbox here has two benefits: 1) Intake air is removed from engine heat, and 2) The fuel tank is lower for better centre of gravity. KTM have also designed this subframe to allow for a lower seat height of only 825 mm.

As we mentioned earlier, the swingarm is much longer. However, it is still a die-cast, open-lattice design we have grown accustomed to on other KTMs.

Moving on to the suspension, the forks are 43 mm open-cartridge WP Suspension. The compression and rebound damping duties are performed by separate fork legs, while the springs are progressive. The rear shock absorber is also by WP and is gas-assisted.

The front brakes are two 300 mm discs clamped by 4-piston radially-mounted calipers. These calipers were specifically developed for the 790 Duke.

As for the electronics, the 790 Duke boasts a full complement of rider aids. Along with the Ride-by-Wire throttle, the bike has four ride modes i.e. RAIN, STREET, SPORT and TRACK. In TRACK mode, the rider could adjust his preferred level of throttle response among STREET, SPORT, TRACK; turn anti-wheelie and launch control ON/OFF; and traction control level.

Other rider electronic rider assistance include Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) which complements the slipper clutch to deliver controllable hard deceleration; Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) with Cornering ABS; Supermoto mode which turns off the rear wheel’s ABS to allow drifting; and Quick Shifter+ which works for both upshifts and downshifts with auto-blip function. All these functions are equipped as standard and only the KTM MY RIDE function is optional.

Judging from the list of impressive features, the 800cc middleweight segment is about to heat up. Stay tuned for our full review!

  • KTM Motorcycles Malaysia has officially announced the price of the new 790 Duke.
  • New 790 Duke offers the most bang for the buck when it comes to onboard features.
  • Features include cornering ABS, quickshifter +, colour TFT screen, traction control, and more!

After months of speculation, the day has finally arrived and KTM Motorcycles Malaysia has officially announced that the much awaited KTM 790 Duke is now available in Malaysia for an unbelievable RM64,800 with zero rated GST, excluding insurance and road tax.

Dubbed ‘The Scalpel’, the new 790 Duke continues on the success of its single-cylinder 690 Duke, this time powered by a new 799cc, LC8c DOHC, 8-valve, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine featuring a 75 degree crankpin offset. The offset was chosen to mimic the firing of order of its manic 1290cc 75-degree V-Twin big brother. KTM reverted to a parallel-Twin instead of a V-Twin for a more compact packaging, in aiming for better weight distribution and weight savings, hence a better power-to-weight ratio.

The new engine produces 105bhp at 9,000rpm and 87Nm of torque at 8,000rpm. It now features two balancer shafts to dampen vibration for a smoother ride.

The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with KTM’s PASC power assist slipper clutch, that allows for ultra fast downshifting or decelerating without locking up the rear wheel, thus improving safety.

The new 790 Duke engine is then set in an all-new frame as a stressed member. The new frame comes with unique sections that have thinner-walls with molybdenum steel sections. KTM says the frame has a finely tuned rigidity distribution to offer the best possible sporty feel with maximum feedback to the rider.

A consequence of the new frame gives the 790 Duke an attribute which Malaysians will love: Its seat height is only at 825mm. It’s very light, too, weighing in at 169kg dry.

As for the suspension, the 790 Duke uses specially-developed WP 43mm open-cartridge upside-down forks up front with 140mm of stroke. The rear suspension is a gas-assisted WP shock absorber and adjustable for preload. A WP steering damper keeps front end movements in check.

Other than that, the aluminium triple clamp has been tuned to match the flex of the forks. Steering rake angle is at 24 degrees while trail measures in at 98mm. Note that those are sporty numbers for a nimble handling bike. As with all KTMs, the handlebar is adjustable in four positions.

As for the electronics, the 790 Duke features ride-by-wire technology (RBW), lean angle sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC), cornering ABS, Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) for controlled engine braking, Quickshifter + for quicker  up and downshifts with auto blip, and a full-colour TFT display with the optional KTM MY RIDE smartphone integration.

The new KTM 790 Duke is available in Malaysia as a CBU model and priced RM64,800 with 0% GST without insurance and road tax.
