Moto2: Morbidelli becomes the 2017 Moto2 World Champion!

Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) has won the 2017 Moto2 World Champion after Thomas Luthi was declared unfit due to a fractured ankle.

Red Bull KTM riders Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder celebrated yet another one-two finish with Morbidelli completing the final podium spot.

Morbidelli and Luthi will graduate to MotoGP next season in the same Marc VDS team.

The scene could not have been more dramatic during the Shell Malaysia MotoGP round at the Sepang International Circuit. All weekend, the Moto2 riders have gone through severe heat to sudden bursts of rain to keep them on their toes. None more so than the two riders who were fighting for the 2017 Moto2 championship, Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and Thomas Luthi (CarXpert Interwetten).

Despite all the drama all weekend long, an unfortunate incident fell upon Thom Luthi on Saturday when he suffered a massive a high side upon exiting Turn 2. It was later confirmed that Thomas Luthi was declared unfit to compete in the race which resulted in the crown to fall upon the Marc VDS Moto2 rider.

Even with the 2017 Moto2 championship have been decided way before the race began, Franco Morbidelli gave all he had in the race where Red Bull KTM Ajo riders Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder finishing on top yet again. Morbidelli settled for third which was more than enough to seal the deal.

The battles at the back were also entertaining for over 95,000 attendees where Mattia Pasini (Italtrans Racing Team), Francesco Bagnaia (SKY Racing Team VR46), Fabio Quartararo (Pons HP40) and our very own local Moto2 hero Hafizh Syahrin (Petronas Raceline Malaysia) gave quite a show with amazing battles and overtakes. Pasini, Bagnaia, Hafizh and Quartararo finished in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Xavi Vierge (Tech 3 Racing), Isaac Vinales (BE-A-VIP SAG Team) and Tetsuta Nagashima (Teluru SAG Team) completed the top 10 finishers.

Although it would be interesting to see Luthi and Morbidelli battle it out until the end of their Moto2 efforts before graduating over to MotoGP next season, some would see it as a good opportunity to start fresh as both the riders will be racing for the same team in the premier class come 2018 that is the Marc VDS outfit.
