Leading automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Continental announced that it will be developing a new vehicle-to-vehicle communication system and service for bikes using its Continental eHorizon platform.

Essentially, the firm is trying to make Waze for bikers through eHorizon and create a ‘swarm intelligence’ system. As a result, the eHorizon system will inform bikers in advance of obstacles along their route such as construction zones, accidents, slippery conditions, or traffic jams.

“Having this information can enhance safety, not only for motorcyclists, but also for other road users,” added Ralf Lenninger, Head of Continental’s Intelligent Transportation Systems.

The Continental eHorizon platform also aims to replace the motorcycle’s traditional instrument panel by integrating information from the motorcycle (velocity, revs, etc) with information from the user’s smartphone (GPS location, incoming calls, etc).

However, like Waze, the Continental eHorizon system will only work if a lot of users adopt it. Adding to the challenge is the fact that a number of bike brands are already toying with their own connectivity systems to rival it too.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how this system fares. The Continetal eHorizon system for bikes will be shown off next month during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES). We’ll have more then.
